You pick the car. We sort out everything else. These are the questions that come up most often. If yours isn’t here, ask us: we’d rather explain than guess.

What do you actually do for me?
You pick the car. We sort out everything else. Once you’ve chosen a car, we handle sourcing at Japanese dealer auctions, inspection where available, bidding, export, shipping, customs, import VAT and duty, vehicle approval or MOT, DVLA registration, number plates and delivery to your driveway.
You get one all-in price and one person to talk to from your order to handover. There’s nothing for you to chase.
How do I order a car?
Pick one of the cars we can source from our shop, or place a custom order for anything else. Tell us your budget and spec (year range, mileage, minimum grade, colour, must-haves) and pay the £30 sourcing deposit so we can start searching properly.
We then search the auctions, send you matching cars with translated auction sheets and a written quote, and only bid on a car you’ve agreed to, within the limit you set.
What will the car cost me in total?
The total is the car’s winning bid at auction plus Japan-side costs (auction fees, transport to the port, export paperwork), sea shipping, UK port handling, import VAT and any duty, vehicle approval or MOT and any modifications, DVLA registration and number plates — that is the landed cost — plus our service fee.
Our price guide and calculator show estimated all-in totals for typical cars, including our fee. For a specific car you want us to bid on, we give you a written quote first, and you agree it before we bid.
What does Coggy Cars charge?
Our service fee is 8% of the estimated landed cost, minimum £600 per car, added on top of the landed cost. The minimum applies to cars that land below about £7,500: a car that lands at £6,000 carries a £600 fee, and one that lands at £15,000 carries £1,200.
We agree the fee in writing, as part of your quote, before we bid — so you know the all-in figure before you commit. The price guide and calculator already include it.
Fee shown excluding VAT if applicable.
Do I pay import duty and VAT?
Import VAT at 20% is due on almost every car, charged on the car’s value plus shipping and any duty.
Import duty depends on origin. Under the UK–Japan trade agreement, a car that qualifies as originating in Japan, with the right proof of origin, pays 0% duty. Without that proof, the standard rate is 10%. Not every car built by a Japanese brand qualifies, so we check this before you commit and tell you which rate we expect.
Cars over 30 years old that are unmodified may qualify for reduced historic rates (5% VAT, no duty). HMRC sets conditions, so we confirm eligibility car by car.
How long does it take?
It depends on how quickly we find the right car, shipping schedules, and how soon the car can be tested and registered in the UK. Sea shipping alone typically takes several weeks.
We won’t promise a date we can’t control. We’ll give you a realistic idea when you ask us to bid, and update you as the car moves through each stage.
Can I insure an imported car?
Most Japanese imports can be insured, but not every mainstream insurer covers them, and premiums vary by model. Some insurers specialise in imported cars.
Get an insurance quote before you ask us to bid. We can give you the model, engine and chassis details an insurer will ask for.
What about servicing and parts?
Many Japanese-market cars share engines and parts with models sold in the UK, so servicing is straightforward at most garages. Some models were only sold in Japan, and certain parts may need to come from a specialist or from Japan, which can take longer.
Ask us about a model before you decide. We’ll tell you honestly if parts are likely to be harder to get.
What do auction grades mean?
Each car is inspected at auction and given an overall grade, from S or 6 (as new) down through 5, 4.5, 4 and 3.5 (average for its age). R or RA means the car has had accident repairs to its structure. There is also a separate interior grade, usually A to E.
Grades are a helpful starting point but not the whole story, so we translate the full auction sheet for every car we shortlist.
What if the car isn’t as described?
We work to reduce that risk before you bid. We translate the full auction sheet and the inspector’s notes, study the auction photos and, where it’s available, inspect the car in Japan and send you extra photos or video.
Even so, an auction inspection is a snapshot and can miss things. We’ll explain exactly what is and isn’t covered, and what happens if a car arrives with a problem the sheet didn’t show, in writing before you commit.
Why is there a deposit, and do I get it back?
When you place an order we ask for a £30 sourcing deposit. It shows you’re serious, and it lets us spend proper time searching the auctions and checking sheets for you.
It’s fully refundable and it isn’t an extra cost: it comes off your final price. You get it back if you cancel within 14 days, or if we can’t find a matching car within the search window we agree with you.
You pay it online through a secure payment link. Before we bid on a specific car, we send a written quote that sets out the full price and how the rest is paid.
Can I see the car before you bid?
Not in person, as the car is in Japan. You’ll see the auction photos and the translated auction sheet for every car on your shortlist.
Where available, we can inspect the car before the auction and send you extra photos or video. Inspection isn’t possible for every car or auction, and we’ll tell you when it isn’t.
Are Japanese cars right-hand drive?
Yes. Japan drives on the left, like the UK, so Japanese-market cars are right-hand drive and the headlights are already set for driving on the left.
Does the car need changes to be legal in the UK?
Usually a few. Common ones are an mph speedometer (or dual mph and km/h markings) and a rear fog light. Cars under 10 years old need a vehicle approval test; older cars need an MOT before registration.
We do this as part of UK preparation, and our estimates include a typical allowance for it. Some models need more work than others, and we’ll tell you before you commit.
Do you have cars in stock?
No. We source each car to order from Japanese dealer auctions, based on your spec. The cars in our shop are cars we can source for you, shown with a typical spec and an estimated all-in price from recent auction results. They aren’t individual cars for sale.
Why does the shop only show a few models?
We only list models where, on recent figures, our estimated all-in price (including our fee) comes in below typical UK asking prices, with enough UK listings to be reasonably confident. At the moment that’s 8 models.
Any other car is available as a custom order. Tell us what you want and we’ll tell you honestly whether importing it makes sense.
Who will I deal with?
Carl or Moggy, the two people behind Coggy Cars. One of us looks after your order and stays with you through to handover: one person to talk to, start to finish.
